BUYING MEDICATION

Many medications are sold over the counter in Cambodia including many counterfeit drugs.

Medicine is not a cheap item to buy in Cambodia according to comment from many people. The higher price is because there is not much competition as well as nobody know the real price to buy from the wholesaler or importing product suppliers.

So medicine person or doctors will just sell it in whatever price that they can as much as make money. There is no care of other people business. One other thing when you buy the medicine from the market in Phnom Penh or from other provinces of Cambodia, then you should aware of fake medicine for they give very negative affect for your health.

Many medications are sold over the counter in Cambodia. However, that includes many counterfeit drugs. So it’s best to head to a reputable pharmacy, although they do cost more than the local pharmacies. Normally, you can buy medicine from any pharmacy that authorized by the health authority or certified pharmacy with certification. Prescription is necessary to bring along when you are looking to buy any medicine for treatment of certain type of sickness.

You should be able to find most popular medications in Cambodia, particularly in Phnom Penh or Siem Reap. If you have a prescription for a specific medication, it’s worth calling U-Care before you move to make sure that they carry it or will be able to order it for you. Some medications are not yet available in the Kingdom and others, including many that are restricted in the United States, such as ADHD medications, are not available at all.

However, there are some cases you can just walk to the pharmacy and ask the nurse or medicine from the pharmacy shop to prepare it. There is not any recommendation in whatever situation which you must consult with the doctor before buying the medicine. However, you can read the instruction from the company or medicine suppliers and follow the prescription to avoid any harms.

Pharmacies are everywhere in Phnom Penh. There are big pharmacy in Phnom Penh like around Olympic market area, Tapang market and in front of the Train Station in the city or you can buy from any pharmacy in Cambodia just need to consult with your specialist or doctors first. The chain that everyone seems to trust is U-Care, located in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, and it is guaranteed you are getting the real thing when you buy from them. Additionally, Pharmacie De La Gare – in front of the Train Station – in Phnom Penh has a good reputation. You can often choose between the Western or Chinese/Indian version of the drug.

I don’t buy anything more pyschoactive than Advil and sunscreen from independent pharmacies here. Independent pharmacies in Cambodia have been known to sell fake or substitute medications. This is not a risk you want to take.

Fact is, pretty much anything you can think of is available over the counter in Phnom Penh’s thousands of pharmacies, including drugs such as Xanax, Valium, codeine-containing painkillers, Colonopin, and others. Be responsible, kids.

Hospitals in Cambodia

I’m  not sure about the professional ability or reputation of the medical facilities, just talk about the price.

In Phnom Penh, Somebody said that Thai-owned Royal Rattanak Hospital is the best international hospital in town, but it’s not cheap! You can see Khmer doctors there for less than the foreign doctors charge, but it’s still fairly pricey. A less expensive option that expats still trust is Sen Sok University Hospital or another international hospitals. The consultant price about 10-20$ with good services.

Another option is clinics, which is slightly cheaper. I have not frequented any Cambodian clinics and have not heard good things.

If you chose national hospitals, may be have a really cheap price, sometimes free, but take you a long time to wait and wait.

My baby got sick with really high fever at the evening. I took her to Kantha Bopha and She was hospitalized immediate. This Hospital run for charity that they’ve treated my baby, fill a prescription, give medicine and X-rays,… free. Everything was good with emergency statement. But when we came back to the second examination, it’s really hard because a huge number of peoples…

Most Cambodian patients  seek care first with a traditional  healer. Traditional  methods  include coining (repeatedly  rubbing  the skin with a coin or other blunt object), cupping (applying heat to a cup on  the  skin so that  the  vacuum  created  causes it to  suck on  the skin), massage, acupressure, herbs and many other Chinese remedies.  Cupping   and  coining,  much  like acupressure  and acupuncture, may serve some  function  in decreasing  pain.  The marks of these treatments are common,  and some bear scars from overly enthusiastic amateur therapists. A patient’s chief complaint can often  be guessed  by noting  where  the  coining  marks are. A patient immobilized  from a traffic accident will often have coining done  to them  before any transportation arrives.

Medical Services in Cambodia

I’ve moved to PP for 4 months with my baby. As a healthcare professional, the first thing is medical services in Cambodia that I care about because of my baby’s healthy and myself.

As I know, Medical facilities and services in Cambodia do not meet international standards.  Both Phnom Penh and Siem Reap have a limited number of internationally-run clinics and hospitals that can provide basic medical care and stabilization. Medical care outside these two cities is almost non-existent.

I’ve tried to find the information on internet, magazine,… and go arround PP to see it, and have compiled the following list of local area hospitals, clinics, and pharmacies in Phnom Penh below.
